Mike Puckett was invited to do a presentation on Lightning Protection for the IEEE Central TN Section and the Music City Power Quality Group. Effective lightning protection involves more than just lightning rods (air terminals) on a building or structure. The indirect effects from lightning are a more common cause of damage than direct strikes. Understanding these indirect effects from lightning and how to protect against them can help in designing effective protection measures against lightning. This presentation discussed these concepts, including grounding and bonding, circuit isolation, and surge protection, along with actual case studies (surge protection was primarily covered by another presenter and therefore was only touched on in this presentation).
