To help its clients avoid inadvertent shutdown of critical equipment due to unrelated faults and to comply with OSHA regulations for arc-flash hazards, Puckett Engineering performs Power System Studies. These studies begin with a Fault Analysis for calculating short-circuit currents. Next, a Coordination Study determines if downstream circuit breakers and fuses open before upstream devices. Once the Fault Analysis and Coordination Studies are completed, the Arc Flash Study is performed to calculate the flash energy that could be released at electrical equipment if something fails or someone drops a hand tool, or similar, across an energized bus. From this data, circuit breakers are adjusted for optimal coordination and arc flash labels are created for advising electricians of proper clearances and protective equipment when working on or near energized equipment.
